PhD Student in Geothermal Utilization

The School of Science and Engineering at Reykjavik University is looking for a PhD student to join the project DeepUtil: Efficient Utilization of Deep Geothermal Fluid. The project is a collaboration between Reykjavik University, University of Iceland and a number of industrial partners and aims at developing technical solutions that enable utilization of high enthalpy geothermal fluid from deep wells.

The successful candidate will contribute to:

  • Analysis of energy conversion cycles for utilization of deep geothermal fluid
  • Development of chemical mitigation equipment for utilization of deep geothermal fluid
  • Heat exchanger design for geothermal fluid with high mineral content

The position is for three years and the successful applicant will be based at Reykjavík University in Iceland.

Qualifications: The candidate should have an MSc in engineering, geoscience or related fields. It is preferable if the applicant has a background or strong interest in:

  • Geothermal utilization
  • Material science
  • Thermodynamics
  • Heat and mass transfer
  • Chemical engineering

Availability: The position is available from November 1, 2018, although this is negotiable.

Workplace: The successful applicant will work in our facilities in Reykjavík, Iceland. Reykjavík University has around 3600 students and 240 employees in four academic faculties: Science and Engineering, Computer Science, Business, and Law. The University is centrally located in Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland. We offer a welcoming and stimulating environment in which to work and live. Reykjavik is located approximately 3 hours flight time from London and 5 ½ hours flight from Boston.
